In the minds of many an orchid is a tropical flower. It is true that the natural habitat of 90% of the world's over 25,000 species of Orchids is the tropics. Many are pleasantly surprised to know that there are also terrestrial orchids that live in Temperate Zones. These mostly perennial herbs survive in winters so cold where the growth of common vascular plants is ruled out. The natural habitat of terrestrial orchids of the Temperate Zone include areas beyond the Arctic Circle, and these resilient flowers spend most of their time buried down in their underground organs (root bulbs or rhizomes) in the warm earth. Terrestial orchids produce shoots that are always erect with a spike or raceme inflorescence bearing quite a few mini flowers.Tropical orchids on the other hand, can flower as climbing, trailing, creeping or segmented plants.
Below is a list including some prefixes and names of all orchid species or genera.
Here are some Terrestrial Orchids of the Temperate zone. Search the Orchid Society of Royal Botanical Gardens' exhaustive listing of terrestrial orchids native of Canada and view each species with full details at http://www.osrbg.ca/orchid_native.html
